Display and retargeting

Stay in front of people who already chose to visit.

Retargeting priced per reminder, capped so it works instead of irritating.

Run Digital runs display and retargeting for Utah businesses as the cheapest line in the budget rather than the loudest. Audiences, pixel and creative stay in accounts registered to your business, and everything is capped so people are reminded rather than followed.

Why Run

Three things we will put in writing.

Every agency says they are different. These are the three we will be held to, on every engagement, from the first month.

01

The accountability factor

A standing meeting cadence, real project management, and deliverables with dates on them. You always know what shipped, what is in flight and what slipped.

You decide if we earn our seat at your table every month. There is no contract asking you not to.

02

A customized solution

Not a display package with an impression target attached. Who visited, how recently and how close they got to buying decides what they see and how often.

Ask for something specific and the answer is usually yes, built for you rather than pulled off a shelf.

03

Actual technicality

Not a sales rep, then a success manager, then an account manager relaying your question to someone who can answer it.

You talk to the people setting the frequency caps.

Why this line item has a bad reputation

Retargeting is cheap, which is exactly the problem.

Because impressions to a warm audience cost so little, it is very easy to buy far more of them than anybody needs. That is how a genuinely efficient channel turned into the thing people complain about at dinner.

The second problem is that display is the easiest place in marketing to spend money on nothing. Impressions on made-for-advertising sites, in ad slots nobody looks at, counted as reach and reported as progress. Prospecting display in particular deserves far more scepticism than it usually gets.

So we run it narrow and capped. A short window, a real audience, a frequency somebody chose on purpose, and placements that get excluded rather than ignored.

Retargeting that works

  • A short window, because intent decays fast
  • Frequency capped at a number somebody chose
  • Audiences segmented by how close they got
  • Buyers excluded the moment they convert
  • Placement exclusions actively maintained
  • Measured on assisted conversions, honestly

Retargeting that annoys

  • A ninety day window following everyone equally
  • No cap, so the budget decides the frequency
  • One audience of anybody who ever visited
  • Customers who bought still being sold to
  • Impressions on sites nobody has heard of
  • Last-click credit claimed for sales it did not cause
Your numbers, not ours

The division that decides whether this works.

Retargeting goes wrong at the frequency, not at the targeting. This works out how often one person actually sees you, using your own numbers.

What does one reminder actually cost?

Retargeting is the cheapest advertising most businesses can buy and almost nobody works out the unit price. Three numbers from your analytics and your ads manager.

Your numbers.

0impressions a month for that budget
0times each visitor sees you again that month
0a month to stay in front of one person who already visited
0is what a single reminder costs you

The reading below is our judgement rather than a published finding. The arithmetic is not: it is division, and it explains why retargeting is usually either the best value line in the budget or a quiet annoyance machine, with very little in between.

The part nobody puts in the pitch

You can rent the work. Never rent the pixel.

Hiring an agency to run retargeting is normal. That is not the problem. The problem is whose account the pixel and the audiences sit in while they do it.

Retargeting audiences are built slowly and quietly. Every visitor over months of traffic, segmented by what they did. If that pixel belongs to an agency, the audience does too, and leaving means starting from an empty list on your first day somewhere else.

We install pixels in accounts registered to your business and build audiences that stay with you. Fire us on a Friday and the audience you spent a year accumulating is still yours on Monday.

In your name, from day one

  • The pixel, in your own ad account
  • Every retargeting audience built from your traffic
  • The conversion history behind them
  • All creative produced, in source
  • Placement exclusion lists
  • Attribution in your own analytics

What you find out you were renting

  • A pixel firing into the agency's account
  • Audiences you cannot take with you
  • Conversion history that stays behind
  • Creative delivered only as finished files
  • Exclusion lists rebuilt from scratch
  • Reporting you cannot verify
In-house capability, agency price

Do you want to manage five marketers?

Running this properly is media buying, creative production, pixel and audience management, placement hygiene and somebody senior deciding what the caps should be. It is a small line in the budget that still needs all five, which is exactly why it usually gets neglected.

We built our careers inside in-house teams before we built this one. Brian has twenty years in agencies. Quinn came up in-house at large publishers, on the other side of exactly these ad placements. That is the team you are renting time on.

Building it in-house

Five hires
  • Recruiting, onboarding and managing every one of them
  • Salaries, benefits, payroll tax and software seats
  • Your time spent on the smallest line in the budget
  • Creative that never gets refreshed because it is not urgent
  • Placement lists nobody has looked at in a year

Run as your team

One monthly fee
  • Media, creative, audiences and hygiene covered from day one
  • A flat package price, not a percentage of your ad spend
  • Thirty years of combined experience on the account
  • No contract, no notice period, no hiring risk
  • Everything built stays in accounts you own

The Utah picture

A small audience you can genuinely exhaust.

The Utah maths problem shows up here more sharply than anywhere else. A retargeting pool in a state this size is small enough that frequency climbs fast. Every figure below is published and linked.

99.4%

of Utah businesses are small businesses, 371,569 of them. Retargeting pools for a local service business are measured in thousands, not millions.

SBA Office of Advocacy, 2025
17.9%

population growth over the past decade against 6.2% nationally, second fastest of any state. New visitors are the thing that keeps the pool from going stale.

USAFacts, US Census data
45.4%

of Utah employees work at a small business, about 690,069 people. A tightly networked market where being annoying gets noticed.

What the work actually is

Eight disciplines of display and remarketing.

This is the list you would be hiring five people to cover.

Pixel and audience setup across Meta and Google

Installed in your own ad accounts, with audiences segmented by what somebody actually did rather than one list of everybody.

Frequency capping

A number chosen deliberately and reviewed, which is the single difference between this channel working and backfiring.

Audience window management

Short windows for high-intent visitors, longer for the rest. Intent decays and the creative should follow it.

Buyer exclusions

People who converted removed immediately, everywhere. The most common and most irritating failure in this channel.

Creative production

Enough variety that a capped frequency still has something new to show, in formats that are not embarrassing.

Placement hygiene and brand safety

Active exclusion of made-for-advertising sites and anywhere your brand should not appear, maintained rather than set once.

Programmatic display prospecting, sceptically

Where it genuinely fits, and we will tell you when it does not, which is more often than the industry likes to admit.

Honest attribution on ROAS and cost per lead

Assisted conversions reported as assists. Retargeting takes credit for sales it did not cause more than any other channel.

See it in motion

Reminding, not following.

The line between the two is a number somebody chose on purpose, and it is almost always the one nobody set.

How the work runs

The first ninety days.

Retargeting is quick to set up and easy to leave running badly for years. This is the order we work in.

01

Pixel and accounts in your name

Installed in ad accounts registered to your business, so the audience accumulating from here belongs to you. If a pixel is already firing into somebody else's account, that is step one.

Your pixel, your audience
02

Segment by intent

Somebody who read one page and somebody who abandoned a booking are not the same person and should not see the same ad for the same length of time.

03

Set the caps deliberately

Frequency and window chosen against the size of your pool, using the arithmetic above rather than the platform default.

04

Exclude the people who already bought

Immediately, everywhere. This costs nothing, takes an afternoon, and is missing from most accounts we inherit.

05

Report assists as assists

Retargeting is the easiest channel to over-credit. We report it honestly even when that makes our own line look smaller.

Run Digital team member reviewing a printed SEO report

The findings get written down. You keep them either way.

What we run today

Thirty-five clients. Four years. One roof.

35Active clients whose marketing we run right now
4 yearsRunning this model under one roof, with the same team
30 yearsCombined marketing and media buying experience
0Clients whose retargeting pixel sits in our account

Those are counts, not projections. We have not printed a return figure for retargeting anywhere on this page, partly because it depends entirely on your traffic and mostly because this is the channel where reported returns are least trustworthy across the whole industry.

If you want to see how we report assists honestly, ask on the call and we will show you a real example rather than a graphic.

Retargeting across Utah

Salt Lake, Utah County, and the rest of the Wasatch Front.

We run this for businesses in Salt Lake City, Provo, Orem, Lehi, Ogden, West Jordan, St. George and across the state. The pool sizes here are small enough that frequency problems arrive at budgets that would be trivial in a larger market, which is why the arithmetic above matters more locally than the general advice suggests.

If your traffic is too low for retargeting to do anything yet, we will say so and talk about what would bring people to the site in the first place.

It does not work alone

Retargeting needs somebody to retarget.

This channel does nothing on its own. It multiplies whatever is already bringing people to the site.

Paid social

Reaches people before they start searching, based on who they are rather than what they typed.

Organic social

Builds the proof that makes every other channel cheaper to convert.

Email and SMS

The cheapest channel you own outright, and the one most often left running on autopilot.

Marketing automation

Does the follow up that gets skipped when the week gets busy.

Before you ask

Retargeting questions we get every week.

You do. Both sit in ad accounts registered to your business. Retargeting audiences take months to accumulate and cannot be exported, so a pixel in an agency account is one of the quietest and most expensive forms of lock-in there is.

It is when it is uncapped, which is most of the time. Capped properly with buyers excluded and a short window, it is a reminder rather than a pursuit. The calculator above shows you which one your current setup is.

A flat monthly package rather than a percentage of ad spend, with current pricing on the packages page. The media budget for this is usually small, which is the point of the channel.

Use the calculator above. If your visitor numbers are low the honest answer is often no, and the budget should go toward getting people to the site in the first place. We will say that on the call.

We are sceptical of it and we will say so. Display to cold audiences is where the most advertising money in the world goes to achieve nothing. There are cases where it fits and they are narrower than the industry pretends.

Actively maintained exclusion lists, which is ongoing work rather than a setting. This is also where a large share of display budgets quietly disappear, on sites built purely to carry advertising.

Often less than the report claims, and we will tell you that. Someone who was going to come back anyway still sees the ad first. We report assists as assists even when it makes our own numbers look worse.

There is no contract, so you leave whenever you want and keep the pixel, the audiences and the creative. If your traffic does not support it we would rather turn it off than keep a line running because it is billable.

Start with the free retargeting audit.

We will check your pixel, your windows, your frequency and your placements, and write down what is being wasted. You keep the audit either way, and if your traffic is too low for this to work yet we will tell you that instead. Prices are published, so you can see what this costs before you speak to anyone.
